Printing & Publishing Philosophy Our goal at BBP/BBI is to help sustain the craft of antique bookmaking in the age of the Internet, enabling readers and publishers to have access to books that are beautiful to behold, satisfying to hold, and wonderful to read. Despite the remarkable speed and versatility of computer-generated typesetting and computer-controlled offset printing, when it comes to a work of literary value or a personal treasure, speed is not the most important consideration. More important is close personal care. Letterpress production requires continuous human involvement at every stage, resulting in books that have the look and feel of life, not the flash and noise of hype. Although Letterpress books are much more costly to produce, we keep our prices competitive with much cheaper-to-produce computer-driven books to give readers more value. |

| Length & Breadth of Service Birch Brook Press and Birch Brook Impressions were founded in 1982, and have served the reading public and book professionals continuously for 25 years. Over that time we have continued to expand our antique production capabilities. Today we offer original wood engravings, hot-foil stamping, hand-binding, and metal type casting on a Monotype system to supplement our inventory of more than 300 American Type Foundry fonts. Six printing presses are in operation -- from hand-operated Vandercook and Hohner presses to a motorized Heidelberg Original Cylinder, a Miehle Vertical V-45, a "Windmill" Heidelberg, and a Chandler & Price platen press. |
Book Trade Affiliations Birch Brook Press is a member of the Academy of American Poets, NYC; the Small Press Center, NYC; Publishers Marketing Association, Manhattan Beach, CA, and the American Typecasters Fellowship, Terra Alta, WV. In 1998 BBP acquired Persephone Press, a poetry chapbook publisher formerly of Whispering Pines, NC. Annually BBP designs, typesets and prints a Letterpress edition of the winning manuscript for the Mary Belle Campbell Book Publication Award, which is administered by the North Carolina Writers' Network.
